Helping Hands Project

Starting in Term 2 of 2024, Vollies Op Shop has had the pleasure of partnering with the Manjimup Senior High School Big Picture Program, in our very own Helping Hands Project. This is run by Adam Purdy, Owner of Vollies Op shop with attending and assisting teachers Zsuzsanna Molnar, Leonie Cole and Gail Raper (Students Teacher).

This project gives the participating students an opportunity to partake in regular workplace tasks at their own pace. Our goal is to work on the fundamental basics everyone needs such as action for reward, commitment to task, team leadership skills and the O.H.S. for employment.
This program takes place one day a week over the duration of a 3-4 hrs and allows us to break up the number of students into rotating teams and individual roles, working together to complete designated tasks in set periods of time.Â

Students experience a 2-hour duration in one designated role, followed by a break. They then return either back to the same task for another 1 hour and a half or are switched to another department/ role in the store.
Roles range between Front Counter/ Customer Service, PoS Register, Clothing Department, Product Item Pricing & Processing, Antique Research, Jewellery Pricing, Display and Stock Rotation, Safe Heavy Item Lifting, Hazard Safety Practices and Store Layout Planning.

Our Aim is to help the students develop Confidence in the Work Place, the Ability to work with others in a team environment and by themselves, Time Management, Communication & Team Leader Skills and not to mention… just helping them feel comfortable being out in the General Public.
We hope by learning and developing these skills early in their education, they have more confidence and better opportunity of securing an on-the-job training position or a level of employment with your business. Together we can help pave their way to a self-motivated and confident future.
Each student completing the program is provided a Certificate of Achievement and a Reference based on the Store Managers opinion on the student’s capabilities and commitment to roles given. We do this by giving them a simple and easy to follow Skills Assessment Chart, that you can use to help them develop further.
We invite you to contact us if you would like to discuss this project further.Â

Here are a few words from some of our Big Picture kids...

Through my time here, I gained valuable skills, met wonderful people, and gained a deeper appreciation for the impact Vollies makes in the community.
Last week I put a bed together for a lady in the community. It felt good to know I helped her and that my work makes a difference.
Thank you again for this wonderful opportunity!
From Ethan.

Volunteering at the Vollies Op Shop has been an incredible experience! Over the past two terms, my class and I have supported the community while picking up essential work-ready skills. I loved it so much I decided to do my work experience there too!
In addition, I've had the chance to connect with amazing people and really see the impact of our efforts in the community.
Best,
Holley

and some from the a M.S.H.S Big Picture Teacher...
Thank you Adam for supporting my students! Your encouragement means so much and truly helps them grow.
We really appreciate your weekly guidance. The real surprise was when you came to see our EXPO during open day - it meant so much to the kids! Even those who were reluctant to present stepped up because of you.
